Little Hippo was protected, guarded over and loved by nineteen grown-up hippos from the moment he got up in the morning until he went to bed at night. That was, perhaps, very good for little hippo, but not nearly so interesting as being left alone now and then. Little Hippo sets off to find a hiding place, one not too lonely and not too far, but just away enough so that he can stand free and alone when the mood hits him. Based on the natural desire of the child to have a place of his own where grown ups cannot intrude, this story, illustrated in humorously delicate pictures by the author, not only projects an emotional state, but with subtlety manages to impart a substantial amount of zoologic detail.
