SHALL NOT PERISH FROM THE EARTH

Here is no college professor's theoretical belief in democracy. Here, instead are ""fighting words"" -- a challenge to all who believe in democracy to be ready to fight for it, to strengthen our forces, to meet force with strength. Government is seen as an instrumentality justified to the extent in which it functions to benefit those who live under it. Thought must be disciplined, lest the maws of totalitarianism devour us. We must toughen our fiber. We know our enemies. We must prepare ourselves. How far can we trust tolerance within our gates, how far extend civil liberties to their forces at work here? Grand companion piece to Mumford's Faith for Living.
