SUMMER OF STONES

An atmospheric (a fairly untouched Greek island), aromatic (goats, donkeys and ouzo) novel spends a summer on Aghios Joannis where Len, an American, is writing and where he is rejoined by Sharon, who had left him for a time with another man. Sharon is a woman who can be had but not possessed; she drifts and while Len is acceptant, others are not-- Constantin, a rather ridiculous little man who lusts for her but wants love as well; and the ""women in black that scuttle like hard-faced scarabs"", the wives and mothers with their sombre, severe judgments. They watch and wait, and only after Constantin's suicide when Sharon turns to a younger Greek boy, take their wordless revenge. Sharon is stoned and buried alive in a pit which becomes a rockpile... A sultry melodrama which a certain momentum, some sensuous glints and highlights, and many contrasts between two ways of life, peasant primitive vs. sophisticated import.
