THE OTHER CITY: In photographs and words, four teenage boys explore the city close to them

Another teenage residents' view of ghetto life (see Holland, p. 389, J-151), financed by the same Eastman Kodak grant, this one also edited by a teacher who divides the photos into several sections--""the other city,"" ""people,"" ""school & fun,"" ""shopping,"" ""jobs,"" ""getting away."" Like The Way It Is, this ends on a slightly wistful note but the effort has a less diffused focus even if the school (not identified but apparently the same I.S. 49) or the desire to get away from it is just about ignored. The straightforward captions are less expansive: ""Nobody lives in these beat-up buildings because they don't have windows or heat"" is a shorter and less particularized expression of Holland's ""This is a picture of slums. Slums is a bad place to live. Slums has no hot water sometimes. Slums has insects in the house. Slums has no lights in the hall sometimes. Slums catch on fire fast. The people who live in the slums should move."" The Other City is more selective in its contents, somewhat more informative and not so self-conscious about the milieu.
