PRESS BOX: Red Smith's Favorite Sports Stories

A top-notch anthology compiled by the seasoned New York Times sportswriter. The highlights here include John Updike's reverential remembrance of Ted Williams' final game; Jack Newcombe's ""Knute Rockne, the Man and the Legend""; Grantland Rice on ""The Big Fellow"" (Babe Ruth); W. C. Heinz's down-to-earth portrait of Red Grange, the ""Ghost of the Gridiron""; and a poignant piece about Gene Sarazen's ""Favorite Caddie"" (an old Englishman who guided him to the 1932 British Open title). Some of the other names on Smith's roster are boxer Gene Tunney; the Knicks' Bill Bradley, Boston defenseman Eddie Shore; tennis great Bill Tilden; professional wrestler Antonino Rocca; and a couple of race horses named Native Dancer and Stymie. Read it at half time, but read it all.
