GETTING TO KNOW PUERTO RICO

Getting to Know Korea and Getting to Know Germany were the two first volumes in Regina Tot's series that established her as an efficient author-illustrator for early readers. Well researched, this book Covers with a logical calm the qualities and events that have given Puerto Rico its individuality. There is a brief historical survey describing the coming of the Spanish, their mixture with the Indians and the following centuries that turned the island into a poor, overcrowded place that is only now being pulled out of its misery by the forthright Operation Bootstrap. Contemporary Puerto Rico, with its good elements coming more and more into focus, is briskly shown- with due attention given to the small details of nature and social life which add color. The clean, well designed pictures are in soft grey and orange.
