RICHARD SCARRY'S ANIMAL NURSERY TALES

Little Red Riding Hood and Goldilocks are both cats here, the gingerbread boy's creators are pigs, the teeny-tiny woman a mouse, and in Scarry tradition all the animals--including the three pigs, three billy goats gruff, little red hen, and others--are clothed, squat and dumb looking. Though these pages aren't as frenetically cluttered as many of Scarry's, they're just as crass--only compare Raymond Briggs' 1972 Fairy Tale Treasury illustrations, which are just as popular in style and immediately accessible but far more expressive.
