THE TENTH LIFE

Death of a Putnam County veterinarian: Inspector ""M. L."" Heimrich's dog-doctor succumbs to a syringeful of curare while spaying a feline, and then the doc's assistant (no dog she) disappears. Was the married good doctor monkeying around on the side? Or was the murderer a pet-owner angered by the doc's alleged malpractices? As any fan of Lockridge's Mr. and Mrs. North might guess (even without the giveaway title), the rather absurd solution here has to do with cats, and it all dog-paddles along in easy slow motion, pleasantly peopled and efficient finessed by the Wonder Bread mass-producer of mysteryland.
