Engaging postwar, vet perigrinations as the author, discharged from the Signal Corps at Camp Crowder, takes the challenge to go on his own as a civilian. This is the interim of travel, work, before he made up his mind to return to his New England home. His 25 year old curiosity took him to Utah, Nevada, the Sierras, California, into jobs of all sorts, provided a rolling stone existence which gave him some answers to his questions. The carry-over of Army know-how, the adjustment from Captain with ribbons to plain Mr., the contacts with people at work, at play -- this is told with humor, some defiant frankness.
