THE SILVER CANDELABRA and Other Stories

An unusual collection of 20 stories by 12 modern-to-contemporary writers of varying sophistication and accomplishment. Though many of the tales are agenda-laden and talky, the several best address with genuine skill this anthology's dominant themes: the experience of emigration and the trauma of cultural assimilation (Samuel Glusberg's ""The Cross""; Bernardo Verbitsky's ""The Visit""); reactions to ethnic prejudice and political repression (Samuel Eichelbaum's ""A Good Harvest""; Bernardo Kordon's ""Beat It, Paraguayan""); and intriguing expressions of feminist sentiment (Silvia Plager's ""No One Will Take Her Place""), and comic surrealism (Cecilia Absatz's ""Feiguele""). A must for university libraries, and a surprisingly welcome addition to the canon of Latin American literature in English translation.
