JABBAR, GIANT OF THE NBA

Inevitably this is pretty much a rehash of the same material featured in James Haskins' From Lew Alcindor to Kareem Abdul Jabbar (p. 805, J-263); however, veteran sports writer Jackson makes more of those really impressive vital statistics -- thirteen pounds at birth, six feet tall in the sixth grade, etc. -- and has just a few more words to add on his training methods and on stratagems of college recruiters. Correspondingly Jabbar's more controversial statements and his problems with the press are soft-pedaled though his essential seriousness is not slighted. We tend to prefer Haskins' emphasis, but Jackson's brisk, businesslike style is easy to take.
