SPORTS: The American Scene

A well selected collection of articles from the pages of Sports Illustrated. Each is a balanced essay and none contain any of those excesses so often found in sports writing such as over-sentimentality, hero worship, image building, second-guessing ad infinitum. Sports Illustrated reputedly pays well and over the years has managed to attract the professional journalists as well as writers specializing in sports subjects. These articles are well researched with opinions supported by facts and a background of personal observation. The writers here include such well known names as Durslag, Kahn, Breslin and Gallico among others. Their subjects range from boxing to betting and from track to pool. A ready audience among intelligent readers with a taste for sporting events.
