This is due a much better reception than his last Letter to Robert Frost. Hillyer writes in the classic tradition, with felicity and finish. The poems of the first section are lyrics, the others range to semi-metaphysical and semi-philosophical, and have a lovely musical quality, a lightness of touch only too rare today. Variations on moods of the day, the night, the seasons, in the first section are unfailingly appealing. He is not a major poet -- but he has rare quality.
