THE SHATTERED PEOPLE

The idea has been worked over before but Hoskins does a briskly efficient job -- palace intrigues in an imperial civilization that gets rid of troublemakers by shipping them off to a harsh alien planet in a state of amnesia. The narrative flashes neatly between the two planets; there's nothing much to the characters but the strange/desert/planet episodes keep you going until the slightly anticlimactic ending.
