Further light fantastics performed by that bonny adventurer, Jamie Stuart -- by-blow, it seems, of James V of Scotland (The Smart Legacy, 1973). The haim countree is dangerous ground so Jamie happily joins a group of mercenaries bound for Sweden who must trespass on the shores of Denmark. After an ambush, rout, and Jamie's rescue by a stunning Norwegian lass, he repairs to Copenhagen -- a kind of 16th century Casablanca where nations and spies of all persuasions meet to cheat. Jamie, very loosely disguised as a French fencing master, contacts old friends, including an enterprising young gunrunner and a battie-scarred Highlander, and tackles the mysteries of the lovely Leonora, former mistress of the Earl of Essex. A string of black pearls represents either Leonora's attempts to save him or take revenge. Sword play, blunt instruments, salon scandal and blithe spirits throughout -- in all, clean fun, if a bit addled.
