DOCTOR, LAWYER, MERCHANT, CHIEF

Collecting New Yorke profiles, Navy experiences, some short story sketches, this offers a wide canvas of the idiosyncrasies, foibles, highly individual facets of human nature. The subjects range from Henry Morgan to muscle builder Atlas, explorer Stefansson, Grantland Rice, Carol and Lupescu, fire chief Patrick Walsh, MacPhail as ex-Brooklyn Dodgers' - head; to battling with Navy red tape, Fians, the King of the Solomons, Captain de Florez, and synthetic training...a motley lot. An intense absorption in picking up the odd and unusual in their lives and characters, these have some feeling of the past tense, because of the changes since they were written, and although they do not have the sharp bite of the Margaret Case Harriman reporting, they do convey a not dissimilar delight in the different kinds of people the author has known.
