THE LEESHORE

High in the atmosphere above the world-ocean of planet Leeshore hangs a thick jungle of plant-bladders and other lifeforms; as a consequence, the dim, murky ocean--studded with living islands that float up from the seabed--suffers a constant bombardment of rotting debris. On one of the islands, overgrown with giant luminescent fungi and infested with huge scavenging crabs, live the teen-aged twins Abitibi and Jellico, sole survivors of a colony that was attacked by Alteretics. Some time ago, you see, the Alteretics built themselves a vastly intelligent computer-god and then declared war on Earth and all its colonies; defeated, the Alteretics fled into space in small groups. One such group destroyed the Leeshore colony--but now a band of hunters from Earth, led by intelligence operative Mantis and fanatic warrior Moon, has arrived on Leeshore in pursuit of the Alteretics and their computer-god. Abitibi and Jellico, then, are caught in the middle of the struggle, being used and abused by both sides; meanwhile, they search desperately for a way to win their freedom, since clearly neither the ruthless Alteretics nor the equally coldblooded Earth hunters are telling them the truth. A novel of striking ideas. Leeshore's odd ecology is well developed; add on the sturdy plotting complete with hidden complications, and note the ample scope for sequels: an impressive, mature debut.
