BORN WITH THE DEAD

Here are three sallies into the beyond with a guide who knows his territory. The first tale postulates a process by which the dead are rekindled into mysterious zombies who no longer relate to their still living former friends and lovers. In the second, a modern Joshua brings civilization down in ruins by soliciting -- and receiving -- a sign from God. And in the third, in a future where medical advances have made death a matter of choice, a world-famous musician ponders his possibilities and reaches a complexly proper resolution. Silverberg's on the All Pro team, always slick, sometimes dazzling as with his pyrotechnical inversion of point of view at the end of the title story.
