THE EXECUTION OF MAXIMILIAN: A Hapsburg Emperor Meets Disaster in the New World

Adequate focus on Mexican nationalism and Napoleonic (the III's) ambitions in the New World is bolstered by gossipy detail on what Max and Carlota wore to their ill-fated coronation, the paranoid symptoms of Carlota's madness and even the furnishings of Maximilian's jail cell. These are, of course, exactly the aspects of Max's anachronistic, tragic monarchy that fascinate adults, and McKown's scaled-down version of the drama will entertain students a little too young for such full dress performances as Gene Smith's adult Maximilian and Carlota.
