Welcome back Mallorca's sardonic, cognac-swilling Inspector Alvarez, who this time must figure out who substituted llargsomis (poisonous) for similar-looking esclatasangs (harmless) in the late Gerald Freeman's dinner vegetables. Was it horse-faced, love-sick spinster Mabel, who helped Gerald embezzle funds out of England and has been ignored by him ever since? Probably. But then Mabel is poisoned too, and the field opens up to include a host of suspects, even lovely Caroline Durrel, Mabel's beneficiary and the object of middle-aged Alvarez' hopeless infatuation. Jeffries does a splendid job of setting off the tense, idle expatriate English against the easygoing (or so they seem) Mallorquins. And his last-chapter twists are of the fair-play, irony-laden Christie variety. Choice.
