Another murder in Mallorca for Inspector Enrique Alvarez (Murder Begets Murder, etc.)--and one of his best. The victim: 50-ish Miriam Spiller, colorless and homely secretary to rich, greedy Agnes Newbolt and the fiancee of failed writer Frank Finnister (who has recently been trying to get some money from near-penniless Miriam). The supposed cause of death: a drunken accident. But Brenda Stewart, one of Miriam's few friends, scoffs at this theory--so Alvarez begins to search for a motive in Miriam's past, discovering that she had connections to a shady real-estate firm in England; it seems possible that Miriam was blackmailing one of her old bosses. And, as the plot deepens, so do the Inspector's feelings for Brenda (a widowed Englishwoman working for a local tour operator) . . . but the dÉnouement sadly puts an end to the romance. Despite Jeffries' rather clunky style--a swift-paced diversion, with the Mallorca scene, its locals and expatriates, done to the usual turn.
