RELATIVELY DANGEROUS

A car crash in the mountains of Majorca, killing driver Steven Thompson and injuring hitchhiking passenger Jack Higham, comes under investigation by laid-back, sweetly intelligent Inspector Alvarez. When Thompson turns out to be stock-swindler Steven Taylor, supposedly buried in England three years before, and poison is found in his migraine capsules, Alvarez resigns himself to another case involving the strange ways of foreigners. He discovers that Thompson/Taylor was working a scam, this time on British expatriates--one of them Archie Wheeldon, boyfriend of Taylor's rich, snobbish wife Muriel. Boorish, self. made millionaire Robert Reading-Smith was a second victim; and newly widowed, impoverished Valerie Swinnerton harbors fierce hatred for Taylor, who cheated her. Also living on the island are Taylor's mostly estranged son Mike, a would-be restauranteur who's short of money, and beautiful Charlotte Benbury, Taylor's latest mistress, living in affluence but behaving erratically. Alvarez moves, with his usual reluctance, from island to mainland to England in pursuit of the truth, and delivers a twisty denouement to end another gossipy, colorful, expertly plotted chapter in the author's easy-to-take series.
