FAMOUS AMERICAN PAINTERS

A collection of short biographies of some twenty well known American painters covers the course of traditional American art from John Symbert, who came to this country from London when he was 44, in 1728, to John Sargent and the early 19th century painters. Included among the others are Copley, Stuart, Inness, Whistler, Homer, Eakins, Prendergast, Mary Cassatt, etc. Despite some notable omissions (Morse, for example), this is a useful reference, and the biographies have been illustrated with reproductions from the artists' works.
