WHERE CAN THE ANIMALS GO?

Wegen's striking pictures of African animals on location are marked by strange Lighting suggestive of the African sun. That, plus a figure/background contrast that gives some of the compositions a crisp cutout look, creates an air of surreal stillness. Less arresting is his 115-word text, which begins with a generalization about the growing difficulty of African animals to ""travel to find places where people do not live,"" then switches abruptly to a particular (but just as flatly projected) time/place where ""the hunters have killed two elephants for sport"" and frightened other elephants, lions, hippos, and zebras. Stark and sober for a picture book--and the undefined words migrate, poachers, and trophies also suggest a slightly older audience. Anomalous.
