BROKEN MELODY

The adolescent artist in the works again in this story of sensitive, solitary Simon -- a composer -- , his attempt to get recognition in his field, and his emotional development through three women who build up his ego and make a man of him. Accompanied by a pretty ripe style, we see Simon progress from Svea, an older woman who gives him a love which is maternal and something more, to a wealthy butterfly, and eventually to Mary, with whom he belongs. Weak, puerile, Simon is not one to attract much sympathy or interest -- his growing pains and pangs a pretty overwritten theme.
