THE YOUNG RUNNER

Anyone interested enough to pick this up in the first place will be lacing up his or her Nikes by the end of Olney's glowing first chapter on the benefits of running. But for all his enthusiasm (and except for one questionable cold remedy--running it off), Olney emphasizes caution: test your fitness first, start slowly, warm up, don't push, train don't strain, don't marathon until you've been running seriously for at least a year. Add to this Olney's good, brisk advice on shoe selection, finding time, and coping with dogs, shin splints, and other nuisances, and you're off and running.
