This is intended -- and revised to that intent -- to supply the layman with a working manual by which he can teach himself how to appreciate -- not to perform but to listen -- music. There is a good deal of information about various forms, the composers procedure, scales, melody, harmony, rhythms, orchestras and instruments, and various classifications such as rondo, minuet, fugue, sonata, oratorio, opera. But the main value of the book lies in the steps in practice listening, the successive development of the process, the questions by which acquired knowledge is tested. Appendices include examples, bibliography, lists of available sources and records.
