EASY PAYMENTS

The easy payments which are so hard to collect provide a shabby, and sometimes grubby, aside on lower middle class life when Dan Cantrell, twenty-four and 4-F, finds that his ""investigative job"" turns out to be bill-collection work. Dan, hoping that this will hold a future- since his wife, Joan, is pregnant, is assiduous and ambitious, but when he comes up against the dreadful poverty of the Browns - who have been dogged by illness and stripped of everything- he meets a five dollar payment out of his own pocket, protects his record with the company- but keeps the account alive. Joan's baby, which is premature, arrives before his hospitalization is in effect; they are now far behind on their bills- but when Brown suicides, harried by another agent, Dan throws up his job and faces the future with greater uncertainty but with a cleaner conscience.... Earnest as much of this may be, the market looks like one of those uncollectibles.
