MR. LINCOLN'S CONTEMPORARIES

A companion volume to the earlier Mr. Lincoln's Camera Man (1946), this adds 172 portraits by Mathew B. Brady to the previous collection. Through the years 1850-1865 this reflects the roster of newsworthy personages--in trade, in adventure, in political and spiritual fields, as well as in the cultural and entertainment worlds. There are the liberals and the conservatives, the economists and the military as the war days close in. The gallery is a pictorial record of the people of the times whose photographs are sharply annotated in the text. An easier book to place than the last The Face of Robert E Lee (1947) and of sure interest to purchasers of its predecessor.
