KANG

The Norton Bay region of western Alaska is the setting for a contemporary ""call of the wild"" tale. Kang belongs to Sam Reece, whose father owns a store in the town of Koyuk. The training of a dog that is half wolf offers a challenge both on the domestic front and the trail. But Sam has the moral support of his parents and his younger sister. Perhaps the information here is not particularly new, but the situations offer variety, as Kang saves his young master's life, leads a sled team on first trial like a pro, makes friends with a horse- and saves him from battling wolves, slips now and then from his newly acquired manners as when he kills some reindeer, and so on. For the market particularly interested in life in the far north, this is competent if not inspired.
