AMERICAN HARVEST: 20 Years of Creative Writing in the U. S.

Short stories (Hemingway, Anderson, Benet, Cather, Lardner, Dos Passos, Weidman, Caldwell, Steinback, Porter, and others); extracts from novels (Wolfe, etc.); critical writing (Van Wyck Brooks, Edmund Wilson); poetry (T. S. Eliot, Marianne Moore, Frost, Millay, Louise Bogan, Mark Van Doren, Tate, etc.); essays, sketches, and so on. The gallery of names is enough to recommend this as a source book for study courses on contemporary (for the most part) American writers. One could wish for more editorial comment and historical, as well as biographical notes. As it stands, it is an excellent anthology of American moderns, good reading, good spanning of a continent's writing.
