REDBOOK'S WISE WOMAN'S DIET COOKBOOK

Another diet plan based on the N.Y.C. Department of Health Guidelines (as was the I Love N.Y. Diet)--1200 calories per day for weight loss, and 1800 calories for maintenance--with daily menus and recipes from the Redbook fries. Since evidence is piling up that exercise is the one way to achieve permanent weight loss--and to reach one's healthy best--this may not be the most innovative of programs. But the menus are balanced, easy-to-follow, and cheat-proof: the daily regimen is totally set, down to the snack allowance. Different categories (pennysavers, entertaining, international) may fend off boredom--and, with rare exceptions, the fare is not unappetizing (do beware the celery-stuffed-with-peanut-butter snack, and the Frank and Applekraut Casserole). Reasonable, if unexciting.
