Ruth Holland revitalizes the standard problem novel formula with some appealing casting -- including stoop-shouldered, offhandedly brilliant Sandy, Laurie, the girl Nick meets in his pimple doctor's waiting room, and Nick himself, who remembers their experiments with ups and downs with fragile sarcasm and an awareness of Sandy's special vulnerability.
