JEB ELLIS OF CANDLEMAS BAY

A revision and condensation of Candlemas Bav. which was one of the Literary Guild choices last year, for the older brackets of this age group, and the younger in Young Adults, this is a warm, real family story of Maine fishing background and proud independence. The summer Jeb is 16 his father is drowned, his mother takes boarders, and his Grampie Jebron helps him into a real sense of manhood. For Grampie persuades Jen to let Jeb help with the debts his father left behind, helps him to carry on the lobstering project so dear to his heart and it is Grampie's gentle and firm lessons which take Jeb through the sudden shock of the old man's death. Nice younger brothers and sisters, two likeable, and one vindictive, aunts, adult romances -- and always the feeling of the life on the Maine Coast make thin a book with more of a grown up flavor than most.
