Another link in the chain of Golden Boy's adventures on the Carter's ranch sees him play an important role in the near loss of the Bar L. After a hard winter faces Charlie and his father with serious financial problems, the Whartons, an oil man and his sickly son Rodney come to visit and, secretly, to prospect. Twin developments are Mr. Wharton's wish to get Bar L for oil, and Rodney's to get wild Golden Boy for his own. But when Rodney takes Golden Boy back east, the venture proves an almost disastrous character test that convinces his father of the value of true ranching and ends well when oil is not found.
