Dry, dry, dry: Appleton's second dental book for the general public in 1980, this reads like a textbook straight through as it explains each of dentistry's seven specialties and (only at the end) gives some basics on teeth and their supporting structures. So, there's one chapter each on orthodontics, periodontics, oral surgery, endodontics, pedodontics, oral pathology, and public health dentistry. Public health dentistry gives us some epidemiology (one out of nine persons in the U.S. has lost all teeth in both jaws) and some advice on developing a dental policy for local governments. Some contributors have altogether forgotten their audience: on congenital craniofacial malformations, ""Women over the age of 36 and men over the age of 55 should be made to realize that they have a relatively high risk for having an infant with congenital malformations."" Except for those considering a career in dentistry, a more readable and useful guide is the other Appleton book Your Mouth Is Your Business (p. 414).
