Third and last First Book for the Epsteins this time is an efficient survey of the craft of printing, from the very simplest of thumb prints to the most complicated photogravures and from the earliest Oriental inventions to the rotary press. Defining printing as the process of getting identical copies, the authors explain first intaglio, relief, ancient seals and the Korean movable type and raised type molds- before launching into Gutenberg and the dawn of European printing. This they do well and in their chronology they point out famous type designers , setting , processes, a printer's apprenticeship and work, modern typesetting machines and the steps like lithography, electrotype and the photographic half tone that revolutionized the press world.
