Dr. Golter became affiliated with the City of Hope in 1926, when it was a small tuberculosis sanatorium in the Duarte Desert near Los Angeles. Now it has become a $10,000,000 hospital and research center where care is given without charge--- and this is the story of its expansion and development through the years. Throughout Dr. Golter's strong religious and humanitarian sense of mission, his belief in the spiritual as well as physical forces of healing, gives his account its special character. The death of a niece from ""consumption""- at that time an almost hopeless disease- led him to the City of Hope in its early years-and the depression, and the heavy obligations of the hospital, took him away from his work with the patients to raise funds for its survival. With the years, the City of Hope grew beyond the limits of ""bed capacity""; cancer became their next concern- and Dr. Golter was among its victims; other illnesses were added to the list of those treated and researched, and today this institution stands as an impressive and inspirational achievement.
