JOHNSON ON JOHNSON

This is the thousandth Everyman Library title and a fitting choice inasmuch as Boswell's Life of Johnson was the first. Unlike Boswell, editor Wain notes, Johnson did not believe in self-exposure; but so astutely has Wain pieced together and connected excerpts from Johnson's letters, the preface to the Dictionary, his travel diaries, and other writings that from youth to old age the man and his views come plain. With Wain's observations for added measure, a first-rate way to make Johnson's acquaintance.
