BUT WHAT ABOUT ME?

I want to put something of myself into the world,"" is the way Lucy's mother explains her decision"" to go to work as a newspaper feature writer--and gradually Lucy comes to realize that ""I like you working. You're--you're--much more happy that way!"" The adjustment of course isn't easy; Lucy is frightened by noises in the empty house after school, and she and her friends next door get into all sorts of small jams and one big one: a fire in Lucy's closet when her mother is away on a business trip. Lucy, almost eleven, is a bit babyish for her age, and her taste in everything from food to fairy tales is unsophisticated at best; others like her might appreciate Love's talent for the mediocre situation story.
