HOME-MADE BABY TOYS

From a Montessori teacher, a collection of easily constructed toys requiring only household odds and ends such as fabric scraps, jar lids, drawer pulls, and cardboard, lots of cardboard. Intended for children up to two years old, they are grouped according to age (two or three months at a stretch) with visual appeal dominating the earliest efforts--mobiles and crib gyms--and multi-textured and more abstract pleasures in later ones. Aware of maturational factors and risky materials, Swan provides instructions which are technically specific, artistically open-ended. Cute, clever, and economical: the toys play-tested by son Christopher and his friends are now being recycled for daughter Erin.
