WHAT HATH A MAN?

This is dull as ditch water. The story of an Englishman who goes to Africa in government service, works up to a high position, is an idealist -- and utterly fails to achieve anything constructive either in his life or his work. Continually misunderstood and misunderstanding, from childhood on; always taking the unpopular side, at the wrong time; his one achievement was an oblique one -- his own failure to carry good will to the natives influenced Rhodes to do his bit. The war smashed his hopes and he disintegrated physically and spiritually. This gives the impression of one of those books written on the outline of a book which has never been filled in nor given life.
