Another dozen short stories from the magazines (SEP is represented by 3, Collier's by 2, Esquire, Bluebook, Swank, American Magazine, Texas Ranger, Gunsmoke, etc. one each) give the lie to the old style blood and thunder for its own sake, make their play for a more authentic, believable peopling of the Old West. Frazee, Schaefer, Evarts, Loomis, Gulick, La Farge, Johnson turn in some snorty tales: Carusso's Sting of the Lance does a real job on Indians and soldiers. Top tale-telling.
