A luxuriant (note the iant since Mr. Rodman starts out by saying, rightly, that the more travelled parts of the Caribbean are handing us back our shopworn image) book about the Caribbean from Jamaica to Haiti with many islands in between. Experienced (Peru, Mexico, Guatemala, etc.), he develops at some length the historical background, political scene, cultural and racial inflections observed at each stop; thus in Puerto Rico he will discuss her divided identity, the old city, Casals and Munoz Matin; he includes talks with natives, artists, writers and refers to other commentators (particularly Leigh Fermor throughout); loathes the glaring vulgarity of all the pleasure domes and big dollar meccas. The commentary is enlightened and varied but this is not a travel guide; it is also not for those basted in sun oil on the dunes of the Hiltons Mr. Rodman has so assiduously avoided.
