THE REVOLUTIONISTS

A verse play by one of the leading American modern poets, whose Lawrence (published by Viking) received critical acclaim. Here, with power and dramatic vigor, is retold the story of slave uprisings in Haiti in 1791; those uprisings which brought into conflict white, black and mulatto; revolutionists, liberal and tyrant. The hero is Toussaint L'Ouverture, who was the liberator, but whose gentle, moderate rule led to his death -- and who, after years of strife, disputed successions and virtual civil war, was followed by the black tyrant, Henry Christophe. Limited audience but well done.
