by Seymour Simon ‧ RELEASE DATE: March 23, 1990
Dewey's sweeping, softly colored, oversize illustrations of dinosaurs have a quiet charm, but lack the vivid energy of, say, Lauber's The News About Dinosaurs (1989) or Peters' A Gallery of Dinosaurs and Other Early Reptiles (1989). Many of the illustrations here lack identifying captions, especially frustrating when the text describes an unusual dinosaur like torosaurus and then it's unclear whether the picture shows him or his better-known relative, triceratops. Simon tackles questions that intrigue children: ""Which dinosaur had the most teeth?. . .the biggest head?"" or ""What color were dinosaurs?"" But sometimes the two- or three-paragraph replies are too brief to satisfy curiosity, so that real enthusiasts may need to look elsewhere. Still, an attractive first look for beginners. Index.
