This doesn't tell you how computers do their work or help you understand them any more than ""plug it in, insert bread in slots, and wait for it to pop"" explains a toaster; but it does make clear, in a simple step-by-step sequence as appropriate for kids as for machines, how to use computers and even, at a rudimentary level, how to tell them what to do--in other words, how to program. The language is BASIC, which now predominates in home, school, and small business computers. Most useful for kids with access to computers (and that's no longer rare), whether they want to teach themselves or brush up on a classroom lesson, this might also satisfy some basic curiosity among those who've never seen one--and it's a lot more fun than those mindless compilations of computer games.
