By presenting the historical angle first, the authors point to the far-reaching damage wrought by man's carelessness with regard to the land. In less than three hundred years, Americans have destroyed three inches of rich top soil. To prevent further ruin, the authors state that young people must become aware of the situation and of the endless problems which relate to it. In discussing the importance of water, wildlife, and the whole order of nature, the authors show that the question of conservation is dependent on a cyclical balance of elements and animal life. Examples of man's mistakes are interjected: e.g. the near extinction of the American buffalo. The more recent efforts to maintain nature's balance: e.g. modern pest control, are elaborated upon. The study is well researched and organized carefully with suggested activities at the end. A realistic, valuable approach to this subject.
