A sort of catalog of representative museum dolls, all but three from the past 150 years, with black-and-white photos and short descriptions of the specimens' clothes, workings and composition. There are mechanical, talking and lifelike dolls; china, rag and paper ones; Kewpies, puppets and soldiers, a Zuni Kachina, an Ashanti fertility doll, and--from the collection of Maurice Sendak-a stuffed Wild Thing and a Mickey Mouse. The last pages show and tell about some elegang dollhouses--one a Japanese palace, another with a miniature art gallery in the entrance hall and complete scale appointments down to soap and clothespins in the laundry room. More for antique buffs than doll lovers, though it might also be a bridge between the two.
