As director of the museum Sir Philip Hendy introduces his charge with a modest sophistication, recounting the inception of the idea, the opinions of art and construction current in the last century which gave shape to the museum and the present status of its important collections of European painting. The selections of the paintings themselves, each of which is expertly reproduced in color, have been divided into chronological periods of time and place and are also presented by Sir Philip whose expressive texts point (often humorously) to minor detail and major trend. Noting the other books on the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum we reviewed in this series, we would ally this with the warmth achieved by M. Huyghe in his dissertations on the French collection.
